Preserving the Past -
While Looking Toward the Future
Arcadia Main Street Program, Inc. is a non-profit
organization with roots dating back to the 1980's when the National
Trust for Historic Preservation formed the Main Street Program. It
is designed to improve all aspects of the downtown area. Improving
economic development, strengthening public participation and making
downtown a focal point for the entire community is top on the
priority list of all Main Street Programs. Making downtown a fun and
interesting place to visit is just as important as recruiting new
businesses, rehabilitating buildings and expanding
parking.
Downtown is the most visible indicator of community pride,
along with its economic and social health. It will be an
asset in the effort to recruit new residents, new businesses
and industries, retirees, tourists and others to the community and
to keep those we already have. Quality of life is what separates
successful cities and towns from declining communities in the new
millennium. Finally, downtown is the visual representation of the
community's heritage.
The
architecture of the downtown area is a physical expression of the
community's history. The Main Street approach encourages
forward-thinking economic development in an historic preservation
context so this community asset and legacy can be passed on to
future generations.
